How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

If you’re an enthusiastic subscriber to the CBD lifestyle, you might have wondered at some point how long it stays in your system. This information might prove to be useful when you’re applying for a new job or volunteer opportunity, making switches to your lifestyle, or looking to find the ideal CBD dosage.

When it comes to CBD we still have so much more to discover, but there's evidence which indicates that CBD has a half-life of about 2-5 days. (“Half-life” refers to the amount of time it takes for half of a substance to be flushed out of the bloodstream by natural processes.) This means that CBD will typically leave your system in around 5-10 days.

But- and this is an important “but”- that time frame will vary from person to person; how long CBD stays in your system is affected by several biological factors. This means that, for some people, CBD can stay in their system for weeks.

So. Why this discrepancy?

Well, there are several different factors that alter how long CBD will be in your system, such as the quality of CBD and the method by which you’re consuming it.

Here, we’re digging into these different factors:

First of All, How High is Your Typical CBD Dosage?

If you only use CBD once in a while, your body will break it down after a short period of time. But, if you use CBD for an extended amount of time, the compound levels will build up in your body, and consequently take longer to leave your system.

The amount you take is also relevant: the larger the dose, the longer it takes for your body to get rid of the CBD.

Here’s a rough outline: when you take a small (single) dose of CBD, it typically is out of your system within 24-48 hours. When you take a higher CBD dose, over a long period of time, it can remain in your body for up to 7 days after you stop. This, however, doesn’t mean that the effects of your CBD will last a whole week. It only signifies that the compound might still be detectable in your blood.

How Are You Taking Your CBD?

As you’ve probably noticed, there are so many different ways to consume CBD. You can vape CBD, rub it on your skin in the form of lotion or salve, snack on CBD edibles, or our favorite: take a CBD oil tincture

CBD oil- when taken sublingually- will start to show it’s effects as soon as 15 minutes, and will last about 4-6 hours depending on your dose.

Genetics Play a Role in Metabolizing CBD

Studies have shown that genetics play a large role in how each person’s individual body reacts to (and metabolizes) CBD.

Here’s a quick chemistry lesson: your metabolism is basically a combination of complex chemical reactions, one of which includes the conversion of food into energy. So, the faster your metabolism is, the quicker things like CBD are broken down, processed and eliminated.

Is Your CBD High Quality?

Another factor in the “how long does CBD stay in your system?” question is the quality of the CBD.

The better the CBD, the less harmful (and unnecessary) additives there will be inside. The additives that are in some lower-quality tinctures will limit the absorption of CBD and also influence how long CBD remains in your system. It’s recommended to always buy CBD products from a company that clearly lists the ingredients on the packaging, and is transparent about their lab reports.

At Rosebud CBD, we pride ourselves in setting the bar in a rapidly-growing industry with high-quality CBD oil sans any additives, fillers, flavorings, sweeteners or preservatives. With our transparent third-party lab test and batch reports, you can be sure that your Rosebud CBD oil is of the absolute highest quality.

Will CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?

Even though Rosebud CBD oil is full-spectrum (meaning it contains the legal amount of 0.03% THC) you’d have to take more than 1000 mg CBD per day to test positive in a drug test. For reference, that would mean taking a whole bottle of CBD oil at once.

If you take regular doses of CBD, there’s not much of a chance that you’ll test positive on a drug test.

However, CBD’s legality in the United States is kind of *complicated* to say the least- and even though it’s a legal compound, CBD can theoretically cause you to fail a drug test. This would be considered a “false positive” test though. If you take a drug test and fail due to using CBD oil, don’t give up. You can usually request another test based on information you provide about your CBD, and the extremely low levels that would show up on the test.
