Cleaning Up The Olive Oil Industry with Aishwarya Iyer

It’s amazing how often I cross paths with another founder who has a story similar to mine, and Aishwarya Iyer, founder of Brightland, is no exception. Already, we shared in common the same design company (shout out SDCO!) which originally connected us, but when I chatted with Aishwarya about why she decided to launch an olive oil company, I realized that we were both driven by the same desire/frustration – why is a quality product in this industry so hard to find?

In celebration of the value both our companies hold in the highest regard – quality – we asked three talented recipe developers to create original dishes and drinks utilizing both Rosebud CBD and Brightland Olive Oil. Get the recipes here (they’re so good!)

In honor of the partnership, I chatted with Aishwarya about Brightland and what sets them apart.

I wasn’t familiar with the olive oil industry being so dirty. How did you discover these issues?

After learning that most of the olive oil that Americans consume is rotten/rancid/adulterated, I wanted to do something about it – I wasn’t sure what that looked like. After moving to California I wanted to champion American-made, beautiful extra virgin olive oil that is also elevated – and that’s where the journey began.

Olive oil is a foundation of wellness; a cornerstone of nourishment for thousands of years and a historic source of wellbeing and ceremony. Athena’s gift of the olive – useful for light, heat, food, medicine or perfume, was one of the most useful and beloved gifts of the gods. I truly believe in honoring the beauty of the land – the California sun and soil and respecting the nourishment it provides.

What is Brightland doing differently?

The majority of the olive oil that Americans consume is completely rotten, rancid or has been adulterated. So gross and zero health benefits! Brightland extra virgin olive oil is sourced from a family farm in California, crafted fresh and with thought and care, and has all of the health benefits. Pristinely packaged in UV-protected opaque glass bottles to maintain integrity, Brightland’s line includes “Awake” and “Alive” custom blends — each meticulously crafted with an intention and mood in mind. “Awake” is ideal for pasta, roast chicken and drizzling over crusty bread on “slow days and cozy nights,” while “Alive” evokes a verve and vibrancy that’s ideal for vinaigrettes, raw vegetables and dark chocolate.

What is your favorite way to use Brightland?

I have a sweet tooth, so my favorite way to use Brightland is to drizzle it over dates + add some sea salt for a decadent snack or dessert.

We believe hemp can help you return to your natural self. What does this mean to you?

As we grow up, we start adding layers to our inner selves, like an onion. I think that returning to your natural self means that we are able to shed some of those layers aside, so that some of the childlike wonder, creativity, curiosity and contentment can rise back to the surface.

What is one self care tool you can’t live without?

I have a jade body roller from Esker Beauty that I absolutely love; I use it to roll my head/scalp and it releases a ton of tension and I can actually feel my jaw unlock when I use it! It’s magical.

What is your favorite way to unwind?

Cooking something simple with my husband (panzanella salad was popular in our home this summer), cuddling with my dog, drinking a cup of green tea, listening to Sister, and incorporating Rosebud into my evening relaxation routine.
